A burr is basically a raised edge or small piece of material that remains attached to a workpiece even after the modification process. It is an unwanted piece of material. It can be removed only with a deburring tool in a method known as ‘deburring’.
Burrs are mostly created after machining operations like drilling, grinding, turning, milling or engraving. It can be present in form of fine wire on edge of a sharpened tool or as raised part of a surface. Typically, this kind of burr is formed when any hammer strikes the surface. Deburring accounts for a substantial part of manufacturing costs.
In printmaking method of drypoint, burr gives rich fuzzy quality to an engraved line and that’s very much desirable. Problem with drypoint medium is that burr diminishes quickly after as few as 10 impressions get printed.
There are mainly three kinds of burrs, which can be formed from the machining operations-breakout burr, rollover burr and poisson burr. Rollover burr is most common among all.
Burrs are mainly classified keeping in mind the physical manner of formation. The burrs in the drilled holes can cause fastener & material problems.
