This is a flat disposable soft black hair brush. It is widely used for touch-up works and coatings and comes with a plain sanded wood handle. It has a bright seamless ferrule as well. Flat soft hair artist brushes are available in various lengths, diameters and sizes.
Round shaped ox hair brush gold brush:
It is made using ox hair and comes with a wooden handle. Available in various sizes and featuring aluminum ferrule, this brush has the capacity of holding he amount of colour and is excellent for removing huge quantities of paint all over the canvas, particularly thicker paint. The brush is great for acrylic paint, watercolours and oil colours.
Preparing to Paint
The first thing you should do is find a canvas. You can purchase a ready made canvas of any size in the craft store. If you wish to have a colored background, buy a jar of Gesso for priming the canvas and giving it a touch of colour. But the primer must dry quickly.
Choosing the paint is the next important thing that you should do. Decide whether you are going to use oil paint or acrylics. There is no odour in acrylics and are very easy to work with because they dry quite fast and if any mistake is made during painting, it can be painted over. On the other hand, oils are not basically used because they take quite long to dry, have odour and doesn’t allow to paint over mistakes.
Collect the artist paint and marking brushes as well as other tools that are needed for doing the painting job. Pick the brushes that you would want to use with the paint that you have chosen. You can also use a palette knife for applying paint, giving it a well textured look. Some artists like using easel while many others choose placing their canvases directly on floor.
Before getting to work make sure to change your clothes. Wear an old clothing or something which won’t bother you even if it gets dirty.

Very little is known about invention of an artist paint brush. 19th century histories of the manufacturers that indicate brushes have been developed recently. Actually, these paint tools were basically imported before. Later, a number of Australian companies were founded, which could manufacture paint brushes but without much dependency on the machineries. Specialized machineries for combining, finishing, handle-making, tapering, and gluing and other jobs came into existence much later.
Today, artist paint brush can be found in many shops like Hight Brush. It is basically a handheld painting tool that is used for applying sealers or paint to the paintable surfaces. It picks paint with the filament and includes ferrule, which is a metal band holding the handle and filament together.
Different kinds of paintbrushes are available in the market. The categories are based, keeping in mind the users. The consumer grade paintbrushes and professional grade paintbrushes are found. The former one is made for homeowners who specialize in painting small projects. And the professional grade paint brushes are ones that are used by professional house painters who need long-lasting, high quality, artist paintbrushes.
Basically, paintbrushes vary basing on the quality of the components and are specially constructed for application of various paints as well as varnishes upon specific surfaces. The filament can be either of synthetic hair or of an animal one and the quality rests largely on differences in the materials.
The animal bristled brushes are generally inexpensive and are available in brushes that are of lower grade. They are often of hog bristle. But the most pricey animal hair brushes are made of sable and used for hand painting. The other animal hair that can be used for making these brushes include of goat, squirrel, horse, badger and ox.
The synthetic filament varies a lot in superiority and is used for making cheap and good quality brushes. Various synthetics perform better with various kinds of paint. They are mainly of three constructions: x-shaped, solid extrusion or hollow. X-shaped filament provides good performance and is cheaper than the solid filament. The solid ones on the other hand last longer.
The handles are made either of plastic or of wood. Different painters prefer different feel of the handle materials. The professional painters like wood handles whereas DIY-ers prefer the plastic ones. The rounder the tool the easier it is to manage it for intricate movement.
It is very important to choose a good artist paint brush for your art. Here is a guideline, which you need to consider when purchasing.
Know the different kinds of brushes
You first need to know the different kinds of brushes and the purpose for which they can be used. Round brushes are excellent for achieving perfection. Flat ones are great for filling in areas and edging. A filbert brush is a must have in your collection. It has rounded corners and is flat in shape. Then there is bright brush, which has shorter bristles. This brush is ideal for detailing. Rigger brush is narrow, round and has long bristles. It is mainly used for detail work and making lines. You may find a variety called fan with its bristles fanned out. It is ideal for delicate blending. There are also two more artist paint brushes available in the market-angle brush and the mop brush. The former one is a multi-purpose brush like flat brush whereas the latter one is great for dragging thinned paint all over.
Know about different hair-types
It is also important for you to familiarize yourself with the different types of hair that are used in brushes. Bristles are basically the cheapest. They are made from pig hairs. You will often find them in a standard brush. Synthetic ones may be expensive or cheap. They have a different feel than the brushes that are made from natural hair. They are a good option for latex paint. However, natural bristles are great for oil-based paint. Then there is another hair-type called sable, which is quite expensive. It is made out of different types of fine-haired animals like weasels, sables and other rodents.
Consider the built of the brush
You must choose the brushes, which are well-built and feels good. Go for brushes whose ferrule is attached to the handle very well. Don’t choose brushes whose bristles are loose. Pay attention the length of the handles. The handling of strokes depends upon the handle. Shorter handles are good for close-up detailed work whereas longer ones facilitate distance slashing movements.
The most valuable tool of an artist is his/her painting brush and to make them long lasting, it’s essential that they should get all paint out of the brush’s bristles. Here we have discussed in detail about the process of cleaning those brushes.
Things you will need include:
- Some mineral spirit, paint thinner or turpentine
- Some liquid soap
Obviously the soap or thinner would not be of any use until you get all the excess paint out of your brush. So, the first thing that you will need to do is take the brush in one hand and a newspaper in another and then wrap the paper around the brush’s metal part. Press it as tightly as you can. Start doing it right from the base of bristles while pulling the painting tool back through the fingers. Try to get as much paint as possible out of your brush. Do this a several times trying to remove all paint, which is stuck close to ferrule. You must have spots of paint all over the newspaper and very less left in the brush.
Dip the tool in the small container where there is paint thinner and scrub all over the bottom of it to remove more paint.
Repeat the process of squeezing using more newspaper but remember that it may become a bit messier this time because the brush has picked up a good amount of liquid thinner. Here you must see more color flowing out of bristles. After you have squeezed out the paint thinner, your brush may get a bit more of its original look but there may still be a paint stain left from oils.
Now pour some liquid soap into your palm and scrub the back and forth portion of the brush across your palm, allowing the soap to enter the bristles for pulling out more of the oil pigment. When soap gets contaminated by paint, rinse the brush as well as your hand with water. Use more soap and start to scrub again. Continue the process until you find the soap changing color in your hand because only that will prove that there is no oil paint left in brush. Rinse the soap for last time and use a newspaper again to get the water removed from bristles.
It is essential to clean an artist paint brush immediately after you are done with your painting job. You may require the paint to sit for a day- in that case too; you will need to clean the brush as soon as you finish it off. Letting it soak in the paint thinner is not a good idea as well. It will only weaken the glue that holds the bristles.
If you take a lot of care and clean your brushes the right way, they will last for long and stay functional all through their lifespan.
Natural and synthetic are the two types of artist paint brushes available in the market. The brushes that are of high quality help to create good artwork on the canvas of artists. These brushes are available in various shapes and sizes and also have different thickness. Handle, belly, bristle, toe, heel and ferrule are the different parts of the brushes and are made up of different materials. Usually painted or varnished woods are used to make the handle portion of the brush. The bristle depends upon the kind of the brush whereas the ferrule holds the hairs and handle in proper shape.
You can get an idea from the name of the brush itself. These brushes are flat and the bristles are arranged according to the shape of the brush. The width of the bristles remain same but the length varies because some brushes have short bristle whereas some have long ones.
The flat brushes which have a short bristle are often termed as square brush. While purchasing the flat brush choose those which have a spring attached to the bristles. You can create broad as well as small stroke with the help of these brushes. To create small brush marks, you should use a short flat brush. A short haired flat brush with a synthetic bristle has the ability to hold less paint compared to the natural or mixed brush with long hair.
It is the most traditional type of artist paint brush which comes to the mind of the people while thinking about painting brushes. The decent round shape and the sharp points enable artists to create fine and sharp lines on the canvas. Top quality hair (Kolinsky sable) is used to prepare these brushes. Always buy round brushes that have a spring in the bristle.
The filbert paint brushes are usually narrow and have round pointed hair. Both thin and broad strokes can be created with the help of a filbert brush. The hog or bristles of these brushes tend to wear down after using for a longer period of time. When these brushes become old, you can use them for dry painting purpose.

Natural brushes used for acrylic paints are unique, beautiful and are very popular among well-known artists. The one’s that can hold paint for a long time are even very popular among artists. Those brushes are strong and durable, have split ends and can be used with oil and acrylic paints.
Synthetic brushes are made of nylon and look very similar to the natural hair brushes. However, the orange and white colored brushes are the most popular ones.
Artist paint brushes are available in different shapes
The artist paint brushes are available in different shapes. Mop, flat, filberts, and round brushes are most often used by the painters. The round brushes are best for the beginners. The mop brushes are useful for wetting a surface and laying in huge areas of color or water. The flat brushes are mainly used for sweeping, bold strokes or to give an edge for fine lines. Flibert brushes are best used for blending and figurative work.
Taking care of your artist paint brush
You must clean the artist paint brush after using. Make sure that you wash it in warm water with soap if you have used water colors. In case of oil paint, it’s best to wash an artist paint brush in turpentine. After washing, always dry it using a soft tissue. Don’t forget to place your brush in an upright position because that will ensure long life of the bristles. Never keep the brush in a way that will cause the bristles to crush. Also never crush the bristles while you are cleaning or painting, as it can destroy your brush. Your brush can last for a long time if it’s used and maintained properly.
